Don't kid yourself, Dean, Sam says to him one night, bitter-drunk and weary, this is a war we've been in our whole lives, and Dad's the one that brought us into it.
Dean looks at him and tries not to resent his anger, roiling heavily between them; someone has to take the other side of it, and as long as Sam is the one who rails loudly against their fucked-up childhood and their revenge-driven father, Dean is the one who has to counter that he only taught them enough to keep them safe from what lurks in the dark; sometimes Dean would like the luxury of being angry at his father as well, but he doesn't feel right unless someone is defending him in his absence, and Sam never will.
People go to war all the time, Sammy, and it's because they're the only ones that can, Dean says, shrugging his shoulders; Sam tips back the rest of his drink and says darkly, Yeah, but how many of them don't come home after that?
(Wow, okay, this totally went in a weird direction I wasn't expecting. XD)
