It's so much, Jim thinks inanely, hand clenched at his side in a vain attempt to staunch the flow of blood, christ what a stupid way to go; and isn't it funny, isn't it, that after years of almost throwing himself into death's ready embrace, he finds out just how much he doesn't want to go?

"Jim, you're going to be fine, kid; I'm going to tear you a new one when all this is done," he can hear Bones chanting in his ear, voice thick with all the things they've never said to one another--and maybe it's time they do.

"Love you, Bones," Jim murmurs, and everything's fading to black like this is the end of his story, but he's wrapped up in Bones' arms and he can't feel anything but the quick rise-fall of Bones' chest behind him; and everything's going to be fine.
