It's kind of unspoken, when Jim asks him to be his CMO on the Enterprise. Kirk doesn't have to say "I want you by myside, Bones," because Bones knows that Jim won't say that as much as he means it.
"Yes, Jimbo," Bones says-but-doesn't-say, "I'll be here to catch you when you fall."
