I think you're right. We weren't supposed to like her, but since people did, I still feel bad, because... well because of all this female characters are never awesome on tv debate that's been raging lately. And River is clearly awesome!
Oh yeah, I went back and rewatched silence of the library two parter and time of angels two parter, and I definitively like her so much more now. Now that we know all this stuff, all of her just makes more sense. I understand why she's so certain that the Doctor will always come when she calls, because that's what she's grown up with. (I hope, head-canon coming on:) Because he promises Amy and Rory that he will take care of their daughter, and he will. Every time River needs him, he will come! And I just, gah, I like it, okey? I really, really like it. This might sound weird, but now that I know she's been a child, she's so much more easier to relate to.
