Still, when Jack's quiet sobs wake him, the pain and loss in those cries pull him from Aaron's bed [carefully, so he doesn't ruin Aaron's rare moment of undisturbed sleep] and down the hall to Jack's room; he gathers Aaron's son in his arms.
"I'm so sorry," he breathes into Jack's ear, and recites for him the only maternal comfort he remembers: softly spoken lines of poetry, fading into the night.
