As a new recruit for Torchwood, she needs to stay fit, so she takes up spelunking, because it gives her a major adrenaline kick and is slightly less dangerous than sky-diving.
As she crawls through the tunnel to the cave with millions of bats (okay, it's probably only several hundred, but whatever, it's a whole bunch) she thinks of something she once told the Doctor - that she thought the teachers lived in the school - and how it turned out that they actually did and they were bat-people intent on taking over the universe.
Thanks to her, school's out for summer and the Doctor's out of her reach forever.
