They’re in a boat on a river made of glass and golden snitches, and Dean tints the dreamworld with an enchanted paintbrush as he and Luna drift along—with the rainbow-shattered sun in her eyes, she points at the Quidditch goalposts towering far above them, where Harry and Ron and Ginny are aloft on dragons and laughing madly; and Dean barely blinks at the sight of a glaze-eyed Hermione hovering past them on a magic carpet made out of books; while on the shore, Neville gallops astride on the back of a Crumple-Horned Snorkack, wielding a blazing sword.
They pass what looks like a rickety train station, and Luna waves at her mirror image, the silvery-haired woman who is sitting there as though she’s always been waiting and always will be, and Dean swallows over the lump in his throat and takes Luna’s hand.
She is laughing as she dabs a bit of enchanted paint on his nose; and he smiles and keeps his eyes open, losing himself in kaleidoscope eyes and her daydream charm for just a little while longer.
