Last night I was having trouble sleeping and started to wonder how all of you discovered fanfiction. And that made me think of how I did:

I found it through Gilmore Girls. Yes, you read that right. Gilmore Girls! It was 2005 and I was watching season 5 of Gilmore Girls on tv. (This is also my favorite season and I own in on dvd.) I was rapidly shipping Rory/Logan and found myself frustrated each time an episode was over and that I didn't get more. And since I live in Norway,  I knew that the episodes had already been aired in the US, so I went online to spoil myself and reassure myself that my ship was going to sail. (It did.) Then, on one fansite they had a link to a Gilmore Girls fanfiction site. And I was like, WHAT IS THIS? And I tentatively read a fic or two, and was kinda hooked. I read every R/L fic on that site and after wards went looking for more. That was when I found fanfiction.net.

But still for over a year all I read was Gilmore Girls fic. I knew that Harry Potter fic existed, but I refused to read it. A Harry Potter story not written by J.K Rowling? Not on my life would I read that. Then, on an episode of Pottercast, Melissa Anelli mentioned that she sometimes liked to read Draco/Ginny fic, and I was like... THAT MIGHT BE RELEVANT TO MY INTERESTS! The first time I entered the Harry Potter section on ffnet, I was in Thailand. (I'm not shitting you! I paid for internet because I was going bonkers without checking my inbox.) I found a Draco/Ginny fic (I remember it was an arranged marriage fic and it's still on my favorites page even though I do not have the balls to read it again- it's probably crap.) and I never looked back. Still, the only HP fic I read is almost only D/G.

I was sold. It was a great new world, and I'm never leaving. It made me write. I never thought I liked to write until I discovered fanfiction. Now it's one of my greatest pleasures.

So I ask you, lovely flist. How did you find fanfiction?

Hmm....how did I discover fanfiction?

Through HARRY POTTER.

So, yeah, I was on Mugglenet with my friend and we were just bored and browsing around when we came across a link for "fanfiction." I was kinda like, "Why the heck not?" so we clicked on it, and I think we clicked on one of the featured stories (because Mugglenet has their own fic archive) and we read until my friend had to go. Thus began my addiction. And then when I went to other fandoms, I discovered fanfiction.net, and then later on, LJ (and also discovered that quality is a lot better in general on LJ). :)

Yes, LJ definitively have the best fanfiction. I was a little doubtful in the beginning. I find the lack of properly labeling and heading of fic annoying, but there are so many good fic writers here. (Especially Narnia!)

Ooooh. Gilmore Girls. I was really into that show for the first, oh, four seaosons or so but shortly after Rori went to college I lost interest.

I came to fanfiction through Firefly, which led to Buffy which led to Supernatural and Harry Potter and now I'm all over the place.

I didn't start watching Gilmore Girls regularly before season 5 (which is probably why that's my favorite season.) Almost all the people I meet say they hate the seasons I like the best. (Like Charmed, my favorite season is season 6 and people are all like I stopped watching after Prue died. And I'm all, but I didn't start watching before after Prue died!!) /rant

Firefly! That's probably a show I should watch, right? I've seen people all over saying how good it was...

harry potter is where it all began for me as well! i'd started reading hp before the first film came out, and had no idea of the fandom that existed online. when the first film finally did come out i went searching online for more information on the actors (rupert!) and other random stuff. aaand somehow i ended up on fiction alley i think? i had no idea what fanfiction was until then. d/g was the first ship i ever read, and it's my otp forever and ever, amen. :D i do read anything though, as long as it's well written!

same thing happened with narnia - i'd first read the books when i was a little kid, and had always loved them. but it wasn't until the first film came out that i went online searching for info on the actors (skandar!) and whatnot, and somehow, again, stumbled upon narnia fic.

when i was just reading hp fic i stuck mostly to fiction alley, ff.net, etc. but most of the narnia stuff i found kept taking me back to LJ, which is why i finally signed myself up here...and discovered that little did i know that all the best writers and fic end up on here. also, it's helped me get into loads of other fandoms, like skins and glee. yay internets!

I had no idea it existed until I googled for Harry Potter fansites. The first site I discovered was FictionAlley.

I've never really been to FictionAlley... I found it confusing.

I actually liked that site and found it less confusing than Fanfiction Net.
