His classmates had nobler motives wanting to make a difference or save lives, some of them wanting to go into medical research to pioneer cures. He wanted a job that would challenge him and pay a shitload of money and he would have gotten that after his residency if he'd actually managed to finish it. Still Torchwood pays well, extremely well but his teammates don't care why he's a doctor only that he's there to patch them up and admittedly it is a bit of an ego boost when he's able to help them.

This is so honest, and it makes sense. But I like to imagine he actually enjoys their company and most of that cockiness is just a show. Very cute and hardly angsty at all. Thanks.

I didn't mean to imply that he doesn't like the team but that he likes to be needed. I think some of the confidence is real but the cockiness is to stop people getting close.
