Mal knows he doesn't have to say it, that River knows what's coming, but he also knows she likes to hear it anyway, believes that the words become real when they are spoken; the future is what happens.

"It's not like she's new or anything, and I've got a powerful need for some sleep," he says, stretching up from the pilot's chair.

"But she is our home and she is your ship, so I will be careful," River smiles.

If she'd been Wash she would have fidgeted through his entire tirade and then delivered some funny comeback at the end, and in the silence after his words he found he was half-waiting for that punchline.

But she was River, and she remained still and smiling. And then she responded, "Mal - she isn't as fragile as you think."
